Replacing an Empty Propane Tank
1. Remove the Propane Tank Cover
-
Go to the back of the cover and find the bungee cable.
-
Unhook and remove the bungee cable.
-
Lift off the cover (it may be a bit tight—this is normal).
-
Set the cover somewhere safe so it doesn’t blow away.
2. Make Sure Tanks Are Closed
-
Check both propane tank valves.
-
Turn them clockwise until tight to ensure they are fully closed.
3. Identify the Empty Tank
-
Look at the regulator gauge:
-
-
The arrow/indicator points to the active tank.
-
If the gauge is red, that tank is empty.
-
4. Disconnect the Empty Tank
-
Unscrew the pigtail hose (the small hose from regulator to tank) by turning counterclockwise.
-
Loosen the hold-down bar/wing nut (turn counterclockwise).
-
Use gloves if it’s tight.
-
-
Remove the bar and set it aside.
-
Lift out the empty tank and place it somewhere safe.
5. Install the Full Tank
-
Place the full tank onto the rack.
-
Adjust the hold-down bar if needed.
Important Safety Rule:
-
One tank must sit in the inner notch, and the other in the outer notch.
-
This prevents tanks from shifting or falling during travel.
6. Secure the Tank
-
Reposition the hold-down bar across the tanks.
-
Put the regulator back in place.
-
Reconnect the pigtail hose (turn clockwise to tighten).
-
Avoid sharp bends in the hose.
-
-
Reinstall and tighten the wing nut securely.
-
Gently wiggle the tanks to confirm they are firmly held in place.
7. Replace the Cover
-
Put the cover back on.
-
Reattach the bungee cable.
-
Tip: Place the closed end of the bungee toward the front for easier use.
-
Using the Regulator System
1. How the Auto Changeover Works
-
The regulator automatically switches to the second tank when the first runs out (if both are open).
2A: Automatic Mode
-
Open both tank valves.
-
The system will automatically switch tanks when one becomes empty.
2B: Manual Control
-
Open only one tank and keep the other closed.
-
When the open tank runs out, manually switch to the other tank.
3. Checking Tank Levels
-
Look at the regulator gauge:
-
Green = gas present
-
Red = empty
-
-
The gauge only shows the tank the selector is pointing to.
-
Turn the selector knob to check the other tank.
Note: The gauge is not gradual like a fuel gauge—it changes in steps (full → partial → empty).
Using and Storing Safely
-
Open the tank valve before using propane appliances.
-
When finished (or storing the trailer), close all tank valves to:
-
Prevent leaks
-
Avoid wasting propane
-
Increase safety
