How do I read and understand my Victron battery monitor?

Please take a moment to watch the video below for step-by-step guidance, or follow the step-by-step written directions.

If you need additional help, our After Sales team at Escape Trailer will be happy to assist you. You can submit a support ticket using this form

1. Locate the Monitor

  • Find the small round dial (Victron battery monitor) on the front passenger-side overhead area.

2. Read the Default Screen (Voltage)

  • Look at the top right corner for the unit.

  • If you see “V”, that means voltage.

  • Example: 12.86V = current battery voltage.

  • This reading already includes anything using power (lights, fans, etc.), so it’s accurate.

3. Switch Between Readings

  • Use the “+” or “–” buttons only.

  • Do NOT use “Setup” or “Select.”

  • Press “+” to cycle through different data screens.

4. Understand Each Screen

  • Time Remaining (“H”)

    • Shows how many hours until your battery reaches its discharge floor.

      • Example: 22.5 H = 22.5 hours remaining.

    • This helps you know when to recharge.

    • The “discharge floor” = the lowest safe battery level before damage or reduced performance.

  • State of Charge (%)
    • Shows battery level as a percentage.

      • Example: 98.8% = almost full.

    • This updates continuously based on power usage and charging.

  • Amp Hours (Ah)
    • Shows net battery usage or gain.

      • Example: –2.9 Ah = you are using power.

    • If it’s positive (no minus sign) = you are gaining/charging power.

  • D. Watts (W)
    • Shows how much power is being used or gained.

      • Example: –66 W = 66 watts being used.

    • Accounts for all inputs (like solar) and outputs.

  • Amps (A)
    • Shows current flow.

      • Example: –5.12 A = battery is draining.

    • Positive value = charging.

  • Back to Voltage
    • Press “+” again to return to the voltage screen.

5. Know What the Signs Mean

  • Negative (–) = battery is being drained.

  • Positive (no minus) = battery is charging.

6. Updating for New Batteries (Optional)

  • If you change battery types (e.g., AGM → lithium):

    • Update the monitor settings using the VictronConnect app.

    • Match settings like:

      • Charge voltage

      • Battery capacity (Ah)

  • If unsure, have a professional do this.

7. Key Takeaway

  • Use the monitor to quickly check:

    • How much power you have

    • How fast you’re using it

    • How long until you should recharge
