What You Need
-
13/16" socket (not included with the trailer).
-
Socket extension (may be needed if you have aluminum rims).
-
Torque wrench capable of 90–95 ft-lb (digital or analog works).
1. Attach the Socket
-
Place the 13/16" socket onto the torque wrench.
-
Add an extension if needed to reach the lug nuts.
2. Set the Torque Wrench
-
Set your torque wrench to 90–95 foot-pounds.
-
Anywhere in this range is acceptable.
3. Tighten Lug Nuts in a Star Pattern
-
Use a star pattern so the wheel tightens evenly.
-
Example pattern (for a 5-lug wheel):
-
Start with lug #1.
-
Move across the wheel to lug #2.
-
Go to lug #3 on the opposite side.
-
Move to lug #4.
-
Finish with lug #5.
-
-
-
Tighten each lug until the torque wrench reaches 90–95 ft-lb.
4. Go Around the Wheel Once More
-
After finishing the star pattern:
-
Go around the wheel in a full circle.
-
Check each lug nut again to make sure it still reads 90–95 ft-lb.
-
Why: The wheel may shift slightly while tightening. This final pass ensures all lug nuts are evenly torqued.
-
5. Re-Torque After Driving
-
Newly installed wheels should be checked multiple times.
-
If measuring in miles:
-
After 60 miles
-
After 120 miles
-
After 180 miles
-
-
If measuring in kilometers:
-
After 100 km
-
After 200 km
-
After 300 km
-
-
Repeat the same star pattern + full circle check each time.
-
All lug nuts should be tightened to 90–95 ft-lb, helping keep the wheel properly centered and secure.
