How do I use my surge protector (EMS) and troubleshoot error codes when plugging into shore power or a generator?

Please take a moment to watch the video below for step-by-step guidance, or follow the step-by-step written directions.

If you need additional help, our After Sales team at Escape Trailer will be happy to assist you. You can submit a support ticket using this form.

1. Connect to Shore Power

  • Plug the trailer into a 120V shore power source.

  • The surge protector will automatically turn on when power is connected.

2. Check the Display

  • Look at the screen once it powers up.

  • It will show:

    • Voltage

    • Amperage

    • Hertz

    • An error code (if any)

3. Understand the Error Code

  • E0 = Normal operation (no issues)

  • Other codes may indicate a problem:

    • E2 = Open ground fault

4. If You See an Open Ground (E2)

  • Try these steps:

    • First option (recommended):

      • Unplug from the current outlet.

      • Try a different power outlet or pedestal.

    • If the error continues:

      • Do NOT try to fix the wiring yourself.

      • The issue is likely with the campground pedestal or home wiring.

      • Contact:

        • Campground staff, or

        • A licensed electrician

5. Generator Use (Special Case)

  • Open ground errors are common when using a generator.

  • This is usually due to how generators are grounded.

  • To resolve it:

    • Use a neutral bond plug designed for your generator.

    • This typically clears the open ground fault.

6. Bypass Mode (Not Recommended)

  • Only use this if absolutely necessary.

    • Locate the EMS switch.

    • Flip it to “Bypass” mode.

  •  Important:

    • This disables surge protection and diagnostics.

    • Your trailer becomes unprotected from electrical issues.

7. Normal Operation Reminder

  • Always ensure the EMS is in NORMAL mode before plugging in shore power.

  • In normal mode, the system protects your trailer and checks power quality before sending electricity inside.
