1. Understand the Two Battery Types
-
AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat): An upgraded version of traditional lead-acid batteries
-
Lithium (LiFePO4): A newer, different battery chemistry (lithium iron phosphate)
-
Both store power and will work—but they behave differently.
2. Compare Charging Speed
-
Lithium: Charges very fast and can handle a lot of power at once
-
AGM: Charges slower, especially when nearing full
-
If you use solar panels, lithium makes better use of limited sunlight.
3. Consider Cold Weather Performance
-
Lithium:
-
Cannot charge below 32°F (0°C)
-
Can still discharge (use power) in the cold
-
-
AGM:
-
Can charge even in freezing temperatures
-
May lose some capacity over time in cold conditions
-
4. Understand Voltage Behavior
-
AGM:
-
Voltage reflects charge level
-
~12.6V = full
-
~12.0V = empty
-
-
Lithium:
-
Voltage stays almost the same from 100% down to ~20%
-
Requires a battery monitor (shunt) to track charge accurately
-
5. Compare Lifespan
-
AGM: Typically lasts 2–4 years
-
Lithium: Can last 10+ years (about 3–5× longer)
6. Look at Cost vs Value
-
AGM: Lower upfront cost
-
Lithium: Higher upfront cost, but longer lifespan = better long-term value
7. Choose Based on Your Needs
-
Pick Lithium if you want:
-
Faster charging
-
Longer lifespan
-
Better solar performance
-
-
Pick AGM if you want:
-
Lower upfront cost
-
Simplicity
-
Reliable charging in cold weather
