1. Notice the symptom
- Watch for RV lights that:
- Dim and brighten repeatedly
- Flicker or pulse
- Cut out when you turn on other appliances
2. Understand the most likely cause
- These symptoms are almost always caused by low battery voltage.
- Think of voltage like water pressure:
- Battery = pump
- Voltage = pressure pushing electricity through your RV
3. Identify your battery type
-
Check whether you have:
- Lead-acid battery
- Lithium battery
-
This matters because they behave differently.
4. If you have a lead-acid battery
- Expect voltage to slowly drop as you use power.
- Typical behavior:
- Fully charged: about 12.6 volts
- As you use power: voltage steadily decreases
- When voltage gets low:
- Around 10.5 volts under load
- You may see:
- Dim lights
- Flickering or pulsing lights
- Electrical cutouts
-
What this means:
- The battery is getting low and needs recharging.
5. If you have a lithium battery
- Voltage stays mostly steady until nearly empty.
- You usually will NOT see dimming or flickering.
-
Instead:
- Everything works normally
- Then suddenly:
- Power shuts off completely
-
What this means:
- The battery’s Battery Management System (BMS) has shut it down to protect it.
6. Do a quick voltage check
-
Use a voltmeter to confirm battery status:
- Lead-acid battery:
- Below ~11 volts = needs charging soon
- Lithium battery:
- Below ~12 volts = getting close to empty
- Lead-acid battery:
7. Take action
- If voltage is low:
- Recharge the battery fully
- After charging:
- Lights and systems should return to normal
