Why are my trailer lights dimming, flickering, or cutting out?

Please take a moment to watch the video below for step-by-step guidance, or follow the step-by-step written directions.

1. Notice the symptom

  • Watch for RV lights that:
    • Dim and brighten repeatedly
    • Flicker or pulse
    • Cut out when you turn on other appliances

2. Understand the most likely cause

  • These symptoms are almost always caused by low battery voltage.
  • Think of voltage like water pressure:
    • Battery = pump
    • Voltage = pressure pushing electricity through your RV

3. Identify your battery type

  • Check whether you have:

    • Lead-acid battery
    • Lithium battery
  • This matters because they behave differently.

4. If you have a lead-acid battery

  • Expect voltage to slowly drop as you use power.
  • Typical behavior:
    • Fully charged: about 12.6 volts
    • As you use power: voltage steadily decreases
  • When voltage gets low:
    • Around 10.5 volts under load
    • You may see:
      • Dim lights
      • Flickering or pulsing lights
      • Electrical cutouts
  • What this means:

    • The battery is getting low and needs recharging.

5. If you have a lithium battery

  • Voltage stays mostly steady until nearly empty.
  • You usually will NOT see dimming or flickering.
  • Instead:

    • Everything works normally
    • Then suddenly:
      • Power shuts off completely
  • What this means:

    • The battery’s Battery Management System (BMS) has shut it down to protect it.

6. Do a quick voltage check

  • Use a voltmeter to confirm battery status:

    • Lead-acid battery:
      • Below ~11 volts = needs charging soon
    • Lithium battery:
      • Below ~12 volts = getting close to empty

7. Take action

  • If voltage is low:
    • Recharge the battery fully
  • After charging:
    • Lights and systems should return to normal
