Why does my lithium battery voltage stay the same even when it’s discharging?

1. Understand what battery voltage actually means

  • Battery voltage is basically a signal of how strongly ions inside the battery want to move between the positive and negative sides.

  • As a battery discharges, that “push” usually changes—depending on the chemistry.

2. Know the difference between lead-acid and lithium batteries

  • Lead-acid batteries:

    • Voltage steadily drops as the battery discharges because the electrolyte changes as energy is used.

  • Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries:

    • Voltage stays mostly steady over most of the discharge cycle.

3. Recognize the “flat voltage zone” in lithium batteries

  • From about 100% down to ~20% charge, voltage only changes slightly.

  • Example range: roughly 13.6V down to about 13.0V.

  • This means the battery can be very full or only half full, and the voltage may look almost identical.

4. Don’t rely on voltage alone to measure charge

  • A reading like 13.3V could mean:

    • ~80% charged, or

    • ~40% charged

  • Voltage is not a reliable fuel gauge for lithium batteries.

5. Use a proper battery monitoring method

  • Install a shunt-based battery monitor.

  • This device tracks:

    • Energy going in (charging)

    • Energy going out (usage)

  • This is the only accurate way to know true state of charge.

6. Pay attention near the low-charge “drop zone”

  • Around 20% state of charge, voltage starts dropping quickly.

  • Near empty:

    • Around 12.8V and falling

    • Can reach ~12.0V or lower at full depletion

  • Avoid regularly running the battery into this zone.

7. Understand why the flat voltage curve is actually good

  • Benefits of lithium’s stable voltage:

    • Lights stay bright until the end

    • Devices run at full power consistently

    • No gradual “slow down” like lead-acid batteries
