Why is my trailer propane appliance clicking on its own and what does it mean?

Please take a moment to watch the video below for step-by-step guidance, or follow the step-by-step written directions.

1. Understand what the clicking is

  • The clicking sound comes from the igniter inside propane appliances (fridge, furnace, water heater).

  • It means the system is trying to light or relight the propane flame.

2. Know what triggers it

  • Your appliance constantly monitors whether a flame is present.

  • If the flame goes out (for example):

    • Strong wind blows it out

    • Low propane pressure

    • Air gets into the propane line (like after a tank change)

3. What the system does automatically

  • The control board detects the missing flame.

  • It automatically starts an ignition cycle.

  • You’ll hear clicking as it tries to relight the flame.

  • It may try several times in a row.

4. What happens if it works

  • If the flame relights successfully:

    • The clicking stops

    • The appliance continues working normally

    • You may not even notice there was an issue

5. What happens if it doesn’t work

  • If it cannot relight after several attempts:

    • The system goes into safety lockout

    • This stops propane from flowing to prevent unsafe buildup

6. When you should check things manually

  • Pay attention if:

    • Clicking continues for more than 1–2 minutes

    • The appliance keeps shutting down or locking out

  • Possible causes to check:

    • Low propane levels

    • Blocked vent

    • Air in the propane line (especially after changing tanks)

7. Key takeaway

  • Short bursts of clicking = normal self-restarting system

  • Continuous clicking or lockout = time to troubleshoot
