Why won’t my trailer fridge ignite on propane?

Please take a moment to watch the video below for step-by-step guidance, or follow the step-by-step written directions.

1. Identify your fridge type

  • If you have a compressor fridge, it does not use propane ignition and this process does not apply.

  • If you have an absorption fridge, continue.

2. Switch to propane mode

  • Turn the fridge to propane mode.

  • This opens the gas valve.

3. Listen for ignition attempts

  • You will hear rapid clicking.

  • This is the igniter creating a spark at the burner.

  • The system may cycle through several ignition attempts.

4. Allow time for gas to reach the burner

  • The ignition cycles are designed to give propane time to reach the burner.

5. Flame detection

  • A flame sensor is located in the burner area.

  • Its job is to confirm whether a flame is lit.

6. Successful ignition

  • If the flame lights:

    • The flame sensor detects it

    • It sends a signal to the control board confirming a stable flame

    • The clicking stops

    • Gas continues flowing normally

7. Normal operation

  • Once the flame is confirmed, the fridge runs normally.

8. If the fridge does NOT light

  •  Possible reasons

    • Air in the propane line

    • Low propane pressure

    • Wind affecting ignition

9. Safety shutdown (lockout)

  • If the flame is not detected after several attempts:

    • The control board shuts the gas valve off completely

    • This prevents unburned propane from building up

10. If lockout occurs

  • Turn the fridge off

  • Wait about 30 seconds for unburnt propane to dissipate

  • Try again

11. If it still won’t ignite

  • You may need to purge air from the propane line

  • Check propane level
